The beginning of statistics in Israel is related to the name of Roberto Bachi (1909-1995). He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Rome in 1930, and served as lecturer and then professor in a number of universities in Italy. After his Aliya in 1938, Dr. Bachi headed the statistical group in the Hadassah Medical Organization, Jerusalem. He was the founder and first head of Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics. Dr. Bachi taught statistical courses in the Hebrew University, and in 1947 he was appointed full professor. He played a vital role in establishing the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Department of Statstics in the Hebrew University.

In the beginning of 70s the tradition of annual statistical meetings was established in Israel. Benjamin Epstein, professor of the Faculty of Industrial Engeneering and Management in Technion, initiated the transformation of this tradition into a formal statistical organization, similar to the American Statistical Association (ASA). In 1975 the annual meeting in the Bar-Ilan University decided to establish the Israel Statistical Association (ISA). Roberto Bachi was elected the first president of the ISA, Benjamin Epstein was the vice-president.
